Had for 1 year and it’s still kickin’

I’ve had my Inspiron mini for about a year and I still love it. It fits in my purse (along with my kindle) and it weighs next to nothing. I’ve taken it to conferences and on vacation. I have a portable DVD/CD burner to install programs and burn discs. I have another regular laptop and 5 other pcs but this is the only one I’ve ever bragged about and showed to strangers. I type about 65wpm and love the keyboard. (I have big hands for a woman.) This is not my fastest computer by any means and I have the XP version but this little guy has made me happy. Also, on several nights I’ve fallen asleep with it and can’t tell you how many times I’ve literally kicked it out of bed not to mention all the times I’ve dropped it and it seems invincible. I’m using it now while I’m lounged back in my recliner watching big screen TV. I can hardly tell it’s on my lap at all except for some warmth. (I’ll probably end up sleeping with it tonight.)

The only thing I might change is getting another one with a faster processor. I can’t justify doing that right now because I’m just too pleased with this tough, easy to use little puter.

Venting is on the underside, which makes me wonder about placing the lap top computer in my lap!!
Not real happy with the touch pad, but do not know whether any worse than other computers.
The most unsatisfactory feature is the screen; no mater what one does, there is always a LOT of reflection.

A wireless mouse is an absolute necesity.

I agree with the reviewer who complained about the touchpad. It’s the one thing I dislike about this computer. It’s a great piece of hardware for the money. It’s small and light (obviously); the keyboard is very nice (even for a guy who’s 6′2″ with moderately large hands); the small screen is quite workable (and I’m a heavy user of both of the large screens on my office desktop); it’s thoughtfully laid out (eg USB ports on both sides).
I bought it to travel with, take notes with at meetings, do email, run itunes, maybe a little skyping (it has a built in camera) – that kind of thing, and it seems like it will do all those well. Would not want to have sit in front of it for 8 hours, but that’s not what it was designed for. If the ipad with 3G was out, I might have bought that instead. My only reservation is the touchpad. Hopefully, there’s a trick to it and I’ll adjust.

Great Little Netbook!!

I just got the Dell Mini 1012 Netbook… and choose this over ASUS 1005, HP 210 and Samsung mainly because of three reasons:

One, its feels solid…feel more like a laptop.. not any cheap old plastic netbook,
Second, the keyboard rocks, simply amazing to type… its not a chiclet keyboard but feels like a real-keyboard. I am typing a little over 80 WPM on it (thats what I get on my regular laptop)..
Finally, the screen is amazing, very clear and bright, better than ASUS or HP or MSI .. go to a store like BestBuy and see them in action and compare. YouTube picture quality has been amazing.

I have used the Atom N270 Netbook before, but the Atom N450 is cool.. I can run Powerpoint, Word Doc and Internet Explorer at the same time… and switching between the Apps without any delay.. almost like a regular notebook — with N270 it literally used to hang Also, I am getting more than 8 hours of battery life with thoese Applications, which is cool.

This is a good one, but they call it a netbook and not a notebook, for a reason

Why 4 stars versus 5? The difference between ‘I like it’ and ‘I love it’. I do like it! I like netbooks for web surfing and emailing, video chat via Skype and little else. Ideally the mini would have a DVD drive, more storage space, a better webcam and THEN I’d love it, but then it would probably be a notebook.

I purchased this item for my 12 year old daughter to access the internet to play online games (Disney’s Club Penguin and Neopets), do basic research for reports and access her email. I wanted something that was ultra-portable, the right size for her small hands, possessing a brilliant display and a good battery life. I went to Dell first because I trust the brand. The Dell Inspiron Mini… did not disappoint.

What I like about it…

1. Great battery life with the 6-cell battery. Averages about 6 hours of solid use with the 6-cell. It does add to the thickness of the back of the unit, but it still fits easily into the case I purchased for it. Targus CityGear Netbook Case for up to 10.2 Inch Netbooks- Black and Grey TSM097US
2. The display is bright and clear.
3. The keyboard, while smaller than the full-sized one, is adequate and responsive.
4. The wireless connection is quick despite not being ‘n-network’ capable.
5. Trend Internet Security USB installed easily and uses very few resources, not bogging down the netbook.

What I wish was better…

1. Less heat! The bottom of the unit gets quite hot. I have to say this worries me. Longevity may be an issue.
2. The finish on the netbook is shiny. I wish it was more fingerprint resistant. I love the glossy black finish, but it does show every smudge.

What I’d love to see in the next generation of netbooks…

DVD drive, n-network ready and HDMI capabilities…with the same price point, battery life and mobility. Yes, I’m really talking about an ideal ‘notebook’ now, but can you blame me? I love the idea of a full-service mini notebook, and I’m sure we’re headed in that direction with the Dell Inspiron Minis.

Mine came with Windows XP, not Windows 7, but I’ve used both and they seem equally zippy to me when accessing the Net. I am pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to anyone who would wants portability, speed and quality to access the internet, at a low price point.

I would not recommend purchasing this product if you have large hands, want to watch movies on your laptop (this could be done by purchasing this item: Samsung USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive for Mac and PC SE-S084C/RSBN (Gloss Black), or wish to do video or photo editing; requiring more computing power – even with a proper amount of storage provided by a Patriot Memory Extreme Performance Xporter Magnum – USB flash drive – 64 GB – 210x – Hi-Speed USB or a Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1 TB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive WDBABM0010BBK-NESN (Midnight Black).

However, if you know that you want a ‘netbook’ and not a ‘notebook’… and understand its limitations…the Dell Inspiron Mini is a good choice!

I have had this laptop for about a month and I love it. It has all the features I need plus some. I replaced an HP laptop that was going down hill fast and this laptop does not have the hardware conflicts that HP computers seem to have. I play DDO quite a bit and the computer has a better display and smoother video than my last one. I love the size of the screen and the full size number pad, it makes things easier. If you are looking at the pictures that come with the description it may seem that it has an HDMI output it DOES NOT. It has a covered port where one can be installed but it is not there. It would have been nice to be able to hook the laptop up to my TV but it lacks the port to do so. Other than that the laptop is a great buy. If you are looking for a backpack for it I did find one that worked. Targus XL Backpack Designed for 17 Inch Notebooks TXL617 was the only backpack that would seem to work for this laptop. I can fit this laptop plus my older one in the same backpack.

Great PC But A Little Big To Carry Daily

I bought this PC to use in my Living Room of my home. It is what I really wanted, large screen and large keyboard. Now the size of it would seem to make it difficult to carry on a daily basis is the way I see it (going thru airports, etc.). As a rule I don’t travel so this works out perfect in my use requirements. Now I will be taking a vacation soon and expect to take this Laptop with me and seeing as I am driving I don’t see any problems on the size of it. Great picture and easy to use. The only down side would be having to carry on a daily basis when flying.

Size wise this machine is impressive. Intellectually, I knew how large this laptop would be, but it was still a shock when I got it out of the box. And Yes, I know it’s in a good portion of the reviews, cause I read them, this bears repeating. This isn’t a comfortable fit on your lap – laptop. However, I bought this machine for two reasons. I wanted a way to watch dvd’s when we were out in the RV and I also wanted to have a laptop to use while we were out camping. I can set this up on the kitchen table in the RV and it’s almost like having a desk. I am pleased with my choice. The screen is large enough to allow us to watch dvd’s and I get a computer to play on with out spending 3-4 hundred on a TV and then 6-7 hundred on a laptop.

I’m not going offer my opinion on the technical workings, there are more reviews posted that cover that adequately and hopefully by people who are more acquainted with the technical side of things. I know when to keep silent.

I’m still getting used to the larger keys, but having enough room on the keyboard for a number pad is wonderful. The shiny case is a problem, I’m constantly wiping off finger prints. However, most of the laptops I looked at this was a common complaint as well.

It’s weight is kind of heafty and finding a bag for it was challenging. There were few choices on line for this size & I found out that finding one retail was not much better. Most laptop bags are sized for 15.6 inch screens. I finally found a good one at Office Depot with wheels and it was also on sale!

I have had portable computers to use with my work since the late 80’s (which means they started out about the size of a suitcase with a small screen about the size of an oscillator to Dell’s D600 laptop). Very Satisfied

I bought this for one of my daughters as backup when her desktop was trashed by malware. I had reservations because other reviewers complained about the touchpad. I have always had a personality clash with touchpads, but decided to buy it anyway. Sure enough, the touchpad is very frustrating under Windows XP, so I bought a USB mouse, which works well.

I have used Linux for the last several years, so decided to do a dual-boot install of Ubuntu, using a pre-release copy of Ubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) from a pen drive. The installation went smoothly, and surprise! surprise! the touchpad works very well under Linux. Because Linux can read/write Windows files, it can be used to repair a trashed Windows.

I rebooted Windows to make sure that it would come up OK (it did) and discovered that if I use my little finger, the touch pad is usable, though still frustrating. Maybe practice will make things better.

The machine is faster than I expected it to be, and the screen is surprisingly easy to read. Really enjoy using it

Nice useful netbook

I’m what you might call a post-computer-era user. I began using computers when you had to build your own, and was working in a computer store when IBM introduced the PC thirty years ago. I’ve had many computers, from tabletops to desktops to laptops and handhelds. I’m pretty much worn out on computers; I just want one that doesn’t weigh a ton, that boots up relatively fast, and that has enough memory and storage for me to do the few things I can’t–or don’t want to–do with my iTouch. Oh, and doesn’t cost something like the gross national product of Peru.

My daughter bought one of these Samsung netbooks last year and I was taken by how suitable it was for everything I needed a computer to do. I wasn’t quite sick of my XP desktop yet so I didn’t do anything about it then. This January I decided to dump all the other computers and focus on a single one that does everything I want. I don’t regret the decision one bit. Though not a blazer, it’s fast enough for my needs. The battery life is fabulous; I charge it about twice a week and the rest of the time I just suspend it (it’s all set up for that–Function Key/Escape does it), and I can come back a day later and find the battery has only lost a percent or two of charge. The screen size doesn’t bother me; if I need it larger I just connect it to my TV. I use a wireless keyboard and mouse ($16.99 from Aldi’s) when I need a full-size keyboard or find the built-in touchpad too annoying. With a nice-size hard drive, a gig of RAM, and a fairly fast front-side bus, this may be the last computer I need–at least until wearable computers are widely available…

Great little machine…..

I have owned the NC10 for about three weeks and there really isn’t anything that I can say bad about it. If I had to pick a con it would be the touch pad mouse. Really though I think that it’s mostly the fact that it’s on a netbook. The mouse is small and can be a pain to use for long periods of time. I purchased a wireless mouse with a ‘nano’ receiver and I just leave the receiver in the netbook. The battery seems to last about 6 hours, it depends on what you are doing. I run a few older games like Age of Empires 2 and Mechcommander and they run great. I am going to install Halflife and see how that goes. One big selling point was that this one still had Windows XP. The ram upgrade will be needed but for now before I run anything more taxing it works great. The keyboard is easy to get used to. The wireless picks up better signal than my full size HP notebook. I Absolutely Love It!

I’ve had this netbook for five months now and I absolutely love it. I got the 2GB RAM expansion and it was easy to buy and install. The keyboard is almost full sized and I was able to type at full speed after just a couple uses. For work purposes (internet, email, video, etc.) it is absolutely perfect. Weighs practically nothing, the battery life is staggering (at least five hours), and the screen, though a little small, looks great. Every time I pull this thing out some random person compliments me on it.

I haven’t had a single issue with it other than making some power saving adjustments so that it’s not constantly going to sleep or dimming the screen. Video works great, though you should probably wait for HD videos to completely load before playing or they will chug a little. Pushing video into full screen makes you feel like you have a mini theatre.

The only real downside is that the speaker is awful. And I mean awful. It’s so quiet you pretty much have to use headphones with it. Also the screen size means you have to do a lot of scrolling. Otherwise, I can’t say enough good things about it. We’ve retired our full size laptops at home. It’s just so convenient and the battery lasts so long the advantages of a big screen do not outweigh the disadvantages.

I’m constantly staggered by the fact that I paid so little for it. It’s worth its weight in gold.

We’ve used this computer while traveling to Japan and Singapore and it works great. I’ve carried it on my motorcycle and it always works, despite the harsh conditions I’ve subjected it to. Very light and easy to use.

Great Computer!

So far this computer has been great, super fast start-up and great battery lfe, fast to surf online. Only downside so far is that I can not change the background picture (maybe to save memory).

Exactly what I was looking for. This is a small laptop, not full size laptop. The only complaint I have is that the MS OS is Windows 7 (entry level) edition. This means that it’s stripped down of features that most of us need. You may have to pay additional money to upgrade the OS to a version of the OS that meets your needs.

I searched for a netbook for about a week and found that I could get a Toshiba netbook at Best Buy for about the same price that had a slightly faster processor but a smaller hard drive. I decided to go with the Gateway because of the 250 GB hard drive instead of the 120 GB. The slight increase in processor speed on the Toshiba just could not offset the Gateways price of $280 out the door with the larger hard drive. I upgraded the memory to the 2 GB max( Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory )which really makes a difference only for downloading files or watching video. The battery life seems to be about what is advertised, or maybe slightly better. I removed Norton’s and installed freeware for anti-virus and spyware and will probably remove the Microsoft Office suite because I don’t want to pay $130 for it. For as little as I expect to use it I don’t think that it is worth it on this netbook. I really only expect to use it for traveling which will consist of web use and email, and maybe video chat occasionally. It is built very solidly, and has great styling. As another reviewer stated, the battery does add about an inch to the depth over other netbooks, but this is only an issue for finding a sleeve to carry it in to protect it. I found a sleeve at Wal-Mart (also here at amazon.com) by Targus( Targus 10.2-Inch Slipskin-Peel Netbook Case )that looks great and fits perfectly. It comes in burgundy colored trim that matches exactly. It is slightly more here at amazon.com unless you get the blue trimmed one, which is about half the price as Wal-Mart. If you are looking for a full time computer, a netbook is not for you, but if you want mobility at a great price then I highly recommend this Gateway.

A Good Little Computer

I have been pleased overall with this Gateway computer. A couple of items though. First, Windows 7 Starter required me to get some new drivers for printers (not the computer’s fault). The battery lasts around 6 hrs of active browsing. It comes preloaded with MS Office Trial Version that you can “unlock” if you pay the fee. I purchased my own Business version and thus had to strip this off before installing mine. I did need tech support for an issue and found out they are only available for a fee so EXPECT NOTHING. Overall I’m pleased with this computer, not its support.

Great Computer!

So far this computer has been great, super fast start-up and great battery lfe, fast to surf online. Only downside so far is that I can not change the background picture (maybe to save memory).

Exactly what I was looking for. This is a small laptop, not full size laptop. The only complaint I have is that the MS OS is Windows 7 (entry level) edition. This means that it’s stripped down of features that most of us need. You may have to pay additional money to upgrade the OS to a version of the OS that meets your needs.

So-So

Pretty good computer for the most part. I’m basically your standard MS Office and web user and I’m pretty happy with its function. Especially considering its size and price. BIGGEST COMPLAINT(S): only has 206GB hard-drive free (states it is 250GB).. that should be illegal!!!! Also, couldn’t get the anti-virus offer stop popping up no matter what I did.. called customer service, got reps in India who could barely speak English only to be told it is a “software” issue and only “hardware” issues are covered by the warranty, and then tried to sell me something like $30 for the service call. Are you friggin’ kidding me?! That should also be illegal. Who’s regulating these companies?!

Big HD and Great Color

I’ve wanted to buy a netbook for a couple months. I’ve done a lot of shopping but hadn’t pull the trigger until last weekend. That’s when I made the jump by buying a Gateway LT2030 while it was on sale. I own a Gateway for my home computer so I had an idea of what quality to expect.

The first thing that caught my eye was the 250GB hard drive on the netbook. Most of the other netbooks I was looking at had only 160GB. The extra 90GB is important simply because I want to take music/video along when I’m travelling. I can easily cut spot on the HD for some videos and have something to watch while on the plane or in the hotel.

I also use my computer a lot for business, which means I need both connectivity and enough power to handle statistical analysis. As for connectivity, this little netbook has everything I need to handle all the mail and online responsbility I need. The screen size (10.1″) has taken some getting used to, but to get the portability I’m okay with that. I can easily use this netbook at any cafe or wi-fi hotspot while on the road. It’s easy to haul and easier to use.

Power is pretty decent. I do a lot of research that requires the use of SPSS, so I was a little worried about the power/processing capability. So far it seems to be pretty good. On a recent project I had do some basic regression analysis and I didn’t notice the computer slowing down much even with a stats model using more than 1000 cases.

The overall usefulness of this netbook is very high. I didn’t think about it when I bought it, but afterward I realized the palm rest area has a bit of a te3xture to it. That provides higher “grip” for your palms, something you’d be surprised at how useful it can be. It also means that fingerprints and smudges don’t show.

The case is actually very well designed and is not over the top. I bought the red unit and love the color. I’d call it a Candy Apple Red but I think it is officially known as Ruby Red. The case also seems fairly sturdy, so I think it should stand up to normal use.

The screen is very sharp and probably is comparible to a decent LCD on a desktop unit. I don’t know that the computer has the power to manage big video editing duties, but so far it’s done fairly well at the hobbyist level photo editing with Corel Photoshop.

One of the other things I liked about this particular unit was the keyboard. I’d used two other netbooks, one with a Chiclet type keyboard. I hated that keyboard, and that’s one reason I didn’t jump to a netbook sooner. The Gateway keyboard is smaller than the full size, split keyboard I normally use. But it has been easier to use than I thought it would. The key operate easily, has even tactile return to let you know they have positively depressed, and don’t get too touchy. I guess the only complaint might be that my fingers still make mistakes, but that’s not a design error as much as it is operator error.

If you want a sub-$200 netbook then you’ll get smaller hard drive and probably a little slower speed. That’s probably going to keep a lot of users from buying this slick little netbook. At $350 this netbook is on the higher side of cost, but I think it’s well worth it. If you need a netbook that rivals what you have on your desktop then consider this unit.

Sweet little netbook

My wife gave me a red LT2030u for Christmas. It’s small, it’s light and in runs most apps as well as my bigger notebooks.
I liked the computer straight out of the box. It processing speed is good, Windows 7 standard ran every thing I wanted and the screen looks great with a clear bright picture.
Me being me, couldn’t leave well enough alone so I added a 2G memory chip (SODIMM Memory module, MN2048SD2-667 – sold by Amazon, an ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U also sold by Amazon and bought a nifty Targus Sport Netbook Case TNC

101US also sold by Amazon.
I had an extra license for Windows 7 Home Premium so I installed it on the netbook.
The netbook immediately found my network and streams HULU movies really well. The only application I have tried that would not run was “Tiger Woods Golf 2008″. In all fairness, netbooks are not really built to play games and it is possible it could be a Win 7 issue with a somewhat older game.

Good to know stuff: – There is only one slot for memory, so to upgrade from 1 to 2G you must buy a 2G memory module and replace the existing 1G module. Most external DVD drives which use the USB ports for power require two USB ports to plug into (they have a Y cable), should be no problem as this netbook has three USB ports.

Exactly what i expected

Exactly what i expected. small, lightweight, and cheap enough that i will take it with me. i intend to use it for travel and internet access. the keyboard is small, but easy to get used to. still need to reset my hotmail accounts, etc so that the small screen doesn’t bug me – but again, exactly what i expected. i might end up wishing it had a cd drive, but external hard drive and flash drives should take care of that. for the price, you can’t go wrong.

Terrific Netbook

I’ve had the Gateway LT2030u for three weeks and am thoroughly enjoying it. I have a full sized computer with all its bells and whistles in a home office and now use it only to update several web sites I maintain and to type and/or print lengthy documents. The Gateway LT2030u had allowed me to go “green” in that it consumes very little energy as compared to my full sized computer and peripherals, plus office heating and lighting. I can use the Gateway anywhere in the house, or for that matter, anywhere on my property.

The Gateway LT2030u is very easy to set up. From opening the box to going online took me about 15 minutes, taking my time. It quickly identified my wireless network and locked on quickly. It is a sharp looking computer with a logically organized keyboard that is easy to use. The battery life is impressive. It kind of reminds me of the Energizer bunny in that it just keeps going!

I added a wireless mouse that required no installation at all. The Gateway recognizes it immediately each time on booting and it certainly simplifies my web browsing. I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser and it was exceptionally easy to download, install, and use. Same with OpenOffice for creating and reading documents and spreadsheets.

I highly recommend the Gateway LT2030u!
